RIS Structure of Western Macedonia
The RIS Structure of Western Macedonia was established through the initiative of the Regional Development Fund (RDF) of Western Macedonia, within the framework of the project “Creation of support structures for competitiveness, innovation and extroversion of enterprises” of the Operational Programme “Western Macedonia 2014–2020”, in order to contribute to the sustainable growth of the Region of Western Macedonia (RWM), by implementing the Smart Specialisation Strategy approach φιλοσοφία της Στρατηγικής Έξυπνης Εξειδίκευσης.
Specifically, it was established to monitor the Smart Specialisation Strategy (RIS3) in the Region of Western Macedonia and to connect local government, citizens, and businesses with higher education institutions and research organizations, in order to achieve the sustainable development of the Region of Western Macedonia through the exploitation of research and innovation outcomes by enterprises.

Based on the implementation of the Smart Specialisation Strategy, which is founded on the quadruple helix model, the needs that the RIS Support Structure is called to serve are, in summary, the following:
Facilitating the linkages between academic/research institutions and businesses.
Facilitating cooperation and exchanges between businesses.
Adoption of good practices and examples from other Greek and/or European regions.
Rational utilization of public resources and incentives for R&D and innovation (RTDI) and entrepreneurship.
Supporting evidence-based decision-making based on data and documentation.
Creating the conditions for attracting businesses and investments.
Facilitating the linkage between the labour market and RIS.
