Innovative solutions for enhancing village water supply and addressing water scarcity for resilient rural and mountain areas

Many local water-supply systems—often fragmented and aging—can’t keep pace with rising climate pressures and seasonal demand peaks. WATERVILL modernises rural and mountain water networks in the Mediterranean by combining technology, nature, and community know-how. WATERVILL upgrades these infrastructures through smart meters, digital leak detection, and drought-resilient materials, while also restoring nature-based buffers like infiltration zones to boost local water retention. In four pilot municipalities, these interventions are shaped through community-led planning, ensuring each solution fits the local context. A shared Decision Support System helps municipalities manage water networks more efficiently. Training modules and a regional Community of Practice spread the model to 14 countries, showing how small-scale systems can become smart, sustainable and replicable.
