Promoting Women’s Health and Safe Motherhood

The main aim of the project WHEALTH is the promotion of gender specific and gender sensitive prevention strategies at national and regional levels. Specifically, the project aims at: • Raising awareness on women’s health and safe motherhood (cervical and breast cancer, breastfeeding etc). • Providing access to health information, especially to women in island and remote communities. • Strengthening social cohesion. • Case studies, educational workshops and campaigns. • A state of the art web site. Gender differences are not always taken into account in the provision of healthcare and as women’s health priorities differ across Europe, women living in the island and coastal areas of ARCHIMED share common problems stemming from the lack of gender sensitive approaches in the provision of healthcare. WHEALTH can [...]

Documentation, Training and Transfer of Knowledge for Civil Protection

The project TASK FORCE aims at improving the effectiveness with which civil protection is delivered, both in preventive and reactive terms, through: • Networking, exchange of know-how and best practices • Raising Awareness on civil protection via education campaigns and the internet • Training and capacity building • Development and pilot application of a civil protection school education programme • Design and development of a Web-site for the project and the monitoring of civil protection issues in the Archimed area As civil protection mechanisms are primarily aimed at functioning on a national level, a recent EU communication has highlighted the need for more training and better communication and coordination between national agencies. As ARCHIMED areas share similar threats, the scope of this project is to [...]

Development and utilization of vulnerability maps for the monitoring and management of groundwater resources in the Archimed area

Groundwater resources are under strain in many Archimed areas because of conflicting water uses and heavy demand. Conflicts between various land-use activities arise, trying to resolve water supply and environmental protection. In order to resolve such conflicts in a reliable manner, optimizing the use of the resources and the potential of a certain region, spatial development strategies are indispensable. To develop optimal spatial development strategies, authorities need scientifically reliable information. For groundwater resources, this information is provided by vulnerability maps, which are used as a tool to determine areas where aquifers are in high risk of pollution. The project WATER-MAP will produce GIS-based vulnerability maps to support the spatial development planning process. To facilitate and optimize the decision-making process relating to the problems of land [...]

Development and Proposition for Implementation of an Efficient Methodology and Appropriate Local Instruments for the Management, Prevention and Reduction of Seismic Risk in Duzce-Turkey, Grevena-Greece and Catania-Italy

Τhe project SRM-DGC aims to the elimination of seismic risks through the development and implementation of efficient seismic risk management tools in three seismic prone areas (Grevena-Greece, Duzce-Turkey and Catania-Italy). Duzce is one of the most seismic prone areas in the world, Grevena have suffered a major earthquake in 1995 and Catania is one of the most exposed cities in Sicily to earthquakes. Local authorities in these three areas are aware of the seriousness of the earthquake risk and of the urgent need to develop and implement efficient seismic risk management “tools”. The project aims at the real reduction of the risk in future earthquakes and the prevention of losses (human, material, e.g. damages to buildings, and immaterial, i.e. social and economic). The partnership comprises [...]

Development of an Information System for Natural Risk Management in the Mediterranean

Earthquakes, landslides, forest fires are a permanent threat for Greece, Sicily and Calabria, causing fatalities, material damage at regional, national and trans-national level. Especially earthquakes are the mostly feared by local populations, causing paralysis of local socio-economical activities. Landslides can be predicted and prevented by taking appropriate actions “a priori”. Earthquakes and forest fires are unpredictable but their physical consequences can be accurately predicted, thus allowing the enactment of effective prevention measures towards the reduction of vulnerability. Consequently, natural risks can be reduced or prevented through effective management.

Network for the Sustainability and Competitiveness of Regions

DESCRIPTION The project S.CO.RE.–Net focuses on integrated natural and cultural resources management. Taking sustainable tourism as a cornerstone – also strongly connected with critical “neighbour sectors” -, the project aims to develop and test a coherent – integrated – mechanism for rational planning and implementation of initiatives for improving local products’ competitiveness and marketability. It will emphasize to collaboration and leading role of local Actors, and to transnational networking and joint action. The integrated and sustainable management of cultural and natural resources lies right at the centre of the S.CO.RE. – Net, which seeks to satisfy needs of several ARCHIMED areas. The axes, around which the project action will be deployed (and the relevant goals), are: o Focus on sustainable tourism industry and products, that [...]

GREEN ENTERPRISE: A Framework for Planning and Implementing Local Level Strategies Serving Sustainable Socio Economic Development

Τhe project Green Enterprise focuses on rational spatial management; taking the Enterprise as a major Actor for sustainable development of the Community, while recognizing the effective management of Environmental Resources as a critical factor for sustainability, the project aims to develop and test a coherent – integrated framework for rational planning and implementation of strategies for promoting and supporting the development of “Environmentally Conscious” and “Socially Responsible” business units. Sustainable, balanced and harmonized spatial development is at the core of the “Green Enterprise” project, which seeks to contribute substantially to planning and implementing such kind of strategies, policies and measures in the ARCHIMED area. Taking Environmental Management as a cornerstone for rational and sustainable Spatial Planning, leading – either directly or indirectly - to significant [...]

East Mediterranean Network for the sustainable development of protected areas

The objective of the project EAST MED NET is the development of an ecologic network between the protected areas of community importance (NATURA 2000). The network of Eastern Mediterranean aims at the recording of the existing environmental and socio-economic situation in the protected areas, which will lead to the development of common management policies and the planning for the preservation of biodiversity. The final objective of the project is the promotion of the environmental awareness and the sensitization of the habitants of each one of the protected areas of the network. The project EAST MED NET involves 9 partners from three member states and 3 areas of particular ecologic importance, namely the National Parks of Northern Pindos, of Cilento and the “Natura” area of Lemnos.
